Welcome to Monmouth Canoe Club!

Club on the water

Monmouth Canoe Club is a family-oriented kayak club affiliated with Paddle Cymru. During the summer, we gather regularly on the River Wye in Monmouth, and in the winter, we run pool sessions at the Monmouth Leisure Centre swimming pool as well as paddling on local rivers.

We paddle kayaks but welcome any craft. We are dedicated to providing a safe, social, and enjoyable environment for everyone on the water. We offer our own equipment for members to use and provide training for both adults and children to become competent paddlers.

To try kayaking, all you need is the ability to swim and a willingness to join us!

For anything that isn’t covered and to join us on the river please contact us at monmouthcanoeclub@gmail.com.

About Us

Group kayaking on the river Kayaking in a pool

Monmouth Canoe Club was established in 1987 and is conveniently located just a few hundred meters from the River Wye, at the Monmouth Canoe and Activity Centre on Old Dixton Road, adjacent to Monmouth Leisure Centre.

Our mission is to promote the sport of kayaking in a safe, supportive, and enjoyable environment, welcoming individuals of all ages and genders. As an affiliated member of Paddle Cymru, our senior members hold various coaching, safety, and ability awards to ensure a high standard of training and support.

The club operates year-round, offering swimming pool sessions on Saturday afternoons during the winter months (October – April), along with winter paddling opportunities for competent paddlers. In the summer, we hold sessions on the River Wye on Sunday afternoons, conditions permitting, and occasionally organise expeditions to other locations.

We encourage our members to learn both during club sessions and on training courses both simple and advanced techniques for both flat and moving water.

There are no upper or lower age limits, and our club is open to all, provided that participants can swim. We find that those younger than 7 or so can struggle. We supply all necessary equipment, but members are welcome to use their own.

While we are not part of the Monmouth Canoe and Activity Centre, we are grateful for the generosity of Sue and Graham Symonds, who provide us with space to store our boat container in their activity centre compound. If you're unsure about joining our club but would like to experience kayaking or canoeing, consider trying a trip through the Monmouth Canoe and Activity Centre. Visit their website.
