About Us
Monmouth Canoe Club was formed in 1987 and is
sited just a few hundred metres from the River Wye, at the
Monmouth Canoe and Activity Centre, Old Dixton
Road, Monmouth (adjacent to Monmouth Leisure
centre).
The aim of the club is to
promote the sport of kayaking in a safe,
supportive and fun environment, catering for all
ages and either sex. To this end the club is
affiliated to the sport’s governing body, Canoe
Wales, and it’s senior
members hold various coaching, safety and
ability awards.
The
club operates all year round, with swimming pool
based sessions on a Sunday evening during the
winter (October – April), as well as some winter
paddling for competent over 18 year olds. The
summer sessions are held on the River Wye (river
levels permitting) with the occasional
expedition elsewhere.
Members are encouraged to participate in the
British Canoe Union's
Awards; progressing from simple kayak/canoe
handling and capsize drill, through basic
stokes, canoe/kayak safety and theory, to more
advanced techniques on placid and moving water
respectively.
There is no upper or lower age limit and the club is
open to both sexes; however, the ability to swim is
a prerequisite. All equipment can be supplied or
individuals are free to use their own equipment
(subject to inspection).
Although not part of the Monmouth Canoe and Activity
Centre we do relay on Sue and Graham Symond's
generosity in providing space to store our boat
container in their activity centre compmound. If
you're not sure about joining our club but would
like to try kayaking or canoeing you could try a
trip through the Monmouth Canoe and Activity Centre.
